Boys will be Boys

Our little boy, Matthew, ADORES his big brother Jonathan. He has been known to wake up crying if he finds out that Jonathan got up before him and he misses his brother! We definitely feel it's a mutual affection between them. We've also said it before that we don't have a 7 year old and a 3 year old, but Matthew thinks he is the same age as his brother and he approaches life full-tilt.

Today, as we were leaving Bible Study Fellowship, Matthew and Elizabeth were running down to the end of the sidewalk. There was a little bit of a misstep on behalf of Matthew and he fell into the sharp edge of a Handicap sign. As I picked him up, my first thought was "looks like we're headed for the ER..." Several friends stopped to ask if we needed help, but I was on a mission to find a friend who attends BSF who is also a nurse. I had her look at it and we tried to steri-strip it together. I had to fill out an accident report and as the minutes ticked by, I still felt we needed to head to the ER. Matthew was such a trooper. After his initial crying, he did not shed another tear! I'm not sure if it was shock or if he is just a brave little guy!
We have had a few other experiences with boo-boos around the eye with our older son, so I was pretty certain we'd have a stitch or two. We headed to the ER after stopping quickly at home to grab a few snacks since I wasn't sure how long I'd need to keep them entertained. As it turned out, we were in and out of the ER in about 30 minutes! Matthew got two stitches. Now, he is even more like his big brother!

He was such a brave boy! The doctor and nurses commented that they had never seen a boy his age not even cry when he got the stitches! Because of the location of the wound near his eye, they had to use a needle to numb it vs. using a gel like they have on Jonathan before. Matthew was wrapped up in a sheet and there was another nurse to help hold him down, but none of that was really necessary. He was such a good boy. I was so proud of him!! He got two blue stitches, a spiderman sticker and a sucker.
