Our brief encounter with a famous person...

The US National Championship Swim Trials are in town this week. I happened to read an article on Michael Phelps in the paper about it on Sunday. He's already won something like 14 gold Olympic medals in swimming, but is trying to qualify for the 2012 Olympics in the sprints. I did notice kids 6 and under were free admission to the trials. My mind began to work and thought it would be neat to send my kids in alone to watch the swimming -- not really. I was willing to pay for my ticket to get to see him swim live!

He had two races today - the 200m Freestyle and 200m Butterfly. I figured we'd have the best bet of getting to see him race today. By the time we arrived after finding a parking spot (long story!) he'd already finished once race. We found a spot to sit and it was nearly time for his 2nd race.
If you look closely in the above picture, you can see him standing behind the 4th podium.

Being the attentive mother that I am, I was dutifully cleaning up spit up when I kept hearing people cheering. I wondered why they kept cheering and could not hear the announcer due to the noise. From where we were sitting I was unable to see the scoreboard, but I did finally figure out that Michael Phelps was racing. It was pretty cool to see him gliding on the water. He won his heat with ease.
Scoreboard!
The kids were pretty interested in the 'guy who swims really fast'. I don't know if they remembered any of the Olympics from last year or if they will remember getting to see such an amazing swimmer, but it was a pretty fun outing for us. One volunteer woman kept telling me to "corral my cats". She thought that was funny!
We surprised Daddy with a visit on our way home. It'd been a long time since we'd visited -- the first time Matthew had ever been there!
